ACT FOUR

Rustin wraps an arm around Louise's neck, and holds a knife in front of her face to cow her.

Kyle curls up on the floor.

RUSTIN PARR
Get goin'! You know where.

KYLE
No, no, no...

Rustin nudges him with his foot.

RUSTIN PARR
Move I say! She's waitn' for us.

Hopelessly, Kyle obeys. Louise tries to struggle, can cannot get free.

INT. PARR'S CABIN -- CONTINUOUS

Rustin pulls Louise out of the room, herding Kyle before him.

LOUISE
Where's my mother? She said she would keep me safe, where is she?

BLAIR WITCH (VO)
(Only Louise seems to hear her)
You are my daughter. I have made you safe.

A young girl is outside the room as well. She has her hands tied behind her back and she is struggling to get up off the floor, but she keeps tripping on the hem of her long skirt. She has red marks, like welts on her arms.

RUSTIN PARR
This is Margaret. She's the last. She says we'll be done after her.

He shoves Louise aside and grabs Margaret. He opens a door to the cellar and goes down, forcing Kyle ahead of him.

EXT. PARR'S CABIN -- MOMENTS LATER

Louise almost dives out of the house in her haste to get away. She runs for the woods and runs into the Witch.

Screams can be heard from the house.

The Witch wraps her arms comfortingly around Louise.

BLAIR WITCH
There there, it must be done.

She strokes Louise's hair for a moment.

BLAIR WITCH
It's time for you to leave and let your revenge be complete. Remember that I will always be with you. I will always be here.

INT. LIBRARY -- EVENING

Justin is absorbed with the diary, Leslie sitting beside him, head down. In addition to the diary, there are photocopied articles about the Blair Witch spread on the table.

LESLIE
It's awful isn't it?

JUSTIN
Yeah, if it all really happened.

LESLIE
What do you mean? You think my Grandmother made all this up?

JUSTIN
No, no. But she could have hit her head in the crash, or eaten some bad mushrooms in the woods or something and hallucinated the whole thing.

He laughs, hoping to bring up her spirits. She doesn't go for it.

LESLIE
It's not funny Justin. What about all this stuff?

She points to the articles about the Witch.

LESLIE
What about those funny letters and symbols? They're just like the ones my Grandmother drew in her diary. Just like the ones carved into her fingers.

JUSTIN
I know, I'm sorry, I wasn't making fun of anything. But Leslie, that woman couldn't have been Elly Kedward, she would have been over 300 years old.

LESLIE
So, you don't believe the story? You don't believe she killed your Grandfather's friends or her aunt?

Justin begins to gather up all their material.

JUSTIN
It doesn't matter. Your Grandmother died a long time ago and all this stuff died with her. Way before anything happened to Grandpa Harper.

LESLIE
He says Lee pushed him down the stairs.

JUSTIN
He also says he saw her in the hospital.

He sighs and shakes his head sadly.

JUSTIN
He's getting old. And the accident probably rattled his brain even more.

INT. PATIENT LOUNGE -- AFTERNOON

Justin is in the lounge with his Grandfather, who is sitting in a wheelchair.

JUSTIN
So that's why you thought Leslie was Lee. She probably looks a lot like her, especially with the short blond hair.

HARPER
Lee's dead? You know that for a fact?

JUSTIN
Her obituary was on microfiche at the library. I've got a copy of it right here.

He pulls out the article from his pocket, unfolds it and reads.

JUSTIN
Wolf, Lee Papert. Born July 18th 1926, Died March 5th 1970, at the age of 44. Survived by one son, Robert Wolf. Beloved wife of the late Jack Wolf. Private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

HARPER
Short and sweet.

JUSTIN
Grandpa, I don't know if Lee did any of the horrible things you think she did. But I do know that Leslie is a totally different person. She feels terrible for how she scared you that time, and she'd like to come and see you.

Harper doesn't speak for a moment.

HARPER
Lee Irwin dead. And I was so sure I'd seen her, skulking into my room. Putting her hands around my throat and staring at me with such hate in her eyes.

He shakes himself as if to wake up.

JUSTIN
Listen Grandpa, I'm going to get a soda. If I find Leslie can I bring her in to see you? She wants to apologize.

Harper takes a deep breath.

HARPER
All right. If you see her, tell her she can come in.

Justin hands the paper to his Grandfather and leaves.

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR -- MOMENTS LATER

Justin approaches a few vending machines and is about to put money in one, when he is distracted by Leslie screaming, back the way he came.

LESLIE
Nooo! Help! Someone help!

He abandons the machines and sprints back the way he came, dodging some carts on the way.

INT. PATIENT LOUNGE -- MOMENTS LATER

Leslie is backed up against one window, screaming, when Justin and a couple of nurses burst in. She's near hysterics, just short of hyperventilating.

Harper Kemp is dead in his wheelchair, Lee's obituary still held in one hand.

JUSTIN
What happened?

LESLIE
I don't know! He just...I don't know what happened!

Justin runs to his Grandfather's side, and see's that the man is dead.

JUSTIN
Grandpa!

He whirls on Leslie.

JUSTIN
What happened?

LESLIE
Don't yell at me! I told you I don't know!

JUSTIN
I'm sorry, I just-

LESLIE
No, I'm sorry Justin. I know you're upset.

The doctor checks Harper over, and somberly shakes his head.

LESLIE
I walked in the room and he...I barely said two words to him. I thought you were in here and...

Justin's parents enter and see what's happened. Justin's mother almost collapses, but his father catches him.

DOCTOR
I'm afraid he's gone. Most likely his heart.

Leslie sobs, and runs out of the room. Justin goes after her.

MRS PETIT
Justin!

INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR -- MOMENTS LATER

Leslie is crying, waiting for the elevator. Justin arrives, and puts his arms around her. She hugs him back.

LESLIE
Justin I'm so sorry! I should never have gone in there, the shock...

JUSTIN
It's not your fault. Please, Leslie don't blame yourself. He was old, and sick and scared. Maybe it's better this way. At least he's not scared anymore.

Leslie snuggles closer.

LESLIE
Maybe you're right. I guess you'll be leaving Sykesville for good now though.

He nods, miserably.

LESLIE
Can I see you one last time? Before you go?

JUSTIN
Are you kidding? Of course.

Leslie takes his hand and gives it a squeeze.

LESLIE
Your parents will want your help for the next couple of days so you'll probably be busy. Let's meet tonight. We can do something special.

EXT. PARK -- NIGHT

Justin walks along a moon lit trail.

LESLIE (VO)
Why don't you meet me in the park? It's beautiful at night, and private. We can look at the stars and...talk.

He continues up the trail, smiling slightly As he nears a clearing at the top of a hill, we hear someone singing.

The words are unrecognizable but the tune sounds like a lullaby.

EXT. CLEARING -- CONTINUOUS

A ring of stones has been laid out in the center of the clearing. Arranged in the circle, in the shape of the Blair Witch stick figure, are bones. They have been covered in blood.

Leslie is standing before the circle, wearing a black hoodie with the hood pulled up. She is singing, and holding a bit of intestine in one hand, a liver in the other. The blood coats her hands and drips down her arms.

Justin arrives and stares in horror.

Leslie sets the organs down on the bones, and Justin makes a disgusted choking sound.

LESLIE
You're early Justin.

She turns to him.

JUSTIN
Leslie, what are you doing?

LESLIE
You weren't supposed to see the ritual. You shouldn't have come early.

She sighs.

LESLIE
Dear, sweet Justin. I really did like you. But now you've witnessed this.

She approaches him, her hands covered in blood.

JUSTIN
Leslie, what are you talking about?

LESLIE
Not Leslie. Lee. Your Grandfather was right. I am Lee Papert.

JUSTIN
Are you nuts?

Leslie continues to advance threateningly.

LESLIE
It's true. I was sixteen when the Witch made me her daughter. And I will be sixteen forever. She has kept me safe all this time so I could take my revenge. And I have. The circle was closed with the death of Harper Kemp. But you saw what no one must see. So now you have to die too. So let's make this as easy as possible okay?

She lunges for Justin, and he breaks and runs into the woods.

LESLIE
You can't escape me Justin Petit! I am the Witch's daughter!

EXT. WOODS -- MOMENTS LATER

Justin flees, while all around him can be heard noises of pursuit. It's similar to the noises heard in The Blair Witch Project.

After a few moments of running, he comes to a tall, steep hill overlooking the reservoir. He stops at the drop off.

Behind him a twig snaps and he spins to see Leslie right behind him.

She points one bloody finger at him, and begins to laugh. It starts out sounding decidedly evil, but then changes to a more normal, if somewhat cruel sound. She doubles over in mirth as Justin goes from terror to confusion.

LESLIE
I...I had you! I totally had you all the way didn't I?

JUSTIN
What are you talking about?

LESLIE
Everything! The blood, the singing, the bones, all fake!

She holds out her hands.

LESLIE
See? Ketchup and grape jelly.

JUSTIN
Are you nuts?

She laughs some more.

LESLIE
Nope. And I'm not Leslie Wolf either. Or Lee Papert. I didn't just fake the bones and blood, I faked everything. My name is Beth Krizer. I'm taking a theater class at the college, and the professor gave us an assignment to create a character. He told us to really try to inhabit the life of the character and then try it out on people.

JUSTIN
I...don't get it.

She talks to him like he were slow.

LESLIE
College class? Theater arts?

JUSTIN
An assignment? Is that what I was to you?

LESLIE
Well, I wasn't lying when I said I liked you. So anyway, I was stuck. I couldn't seem to come up with any ideas. But then when your Grandfather freaked out after seeing me, and hearing about Lee, I just took it from there. It went great! I bet I get a good grade on this one.

JUSTIN
You faked the diary?

LESLIE
Yup! I found an old book in a second hand store. Pretty creative don't you think? There's so much information about the Blair Witch, it wasn't hard to come up with.

Justin stares at her incredulously.

LESLIE
Come on Justin. Let me get cleaned up and we can go do something fun, like we planned. I'll buy you a drink, how's that?

Justin continues to stare, then without a word, turns and walks away.

LESLIE
Hey Justin come on!

INT. CADE'S ROOM

A close up of Cade's "Wall of Weird" shows photos and articles related to the story we just saw. Cade is posting a few new ones, including a copy of Lee Papert's obituary, a newspaper clipping about a war protest, and close-ups of a woman's hands. The fingers have rune shaped scars.

CADE
Justin contacted me initially when he first learned of the Blair Witch connection, hoping to help alleviate his Grandfather's concerns. After his return to Washington, he reluctantly agreed to cooperate with an investigation into the events.

He posts the obituary.

CADE
Lee Papert's obituary is a fake. The article says Lee died in 1970, but the date on the paper itself was 1999. Another obituary was on the same page. Justin missed it, but Harper Kemp did not. It was his own.

The war protest article, and the close ups of the hands.

CADE
The last official record of Lee Papert is of her arrest at an anti-war protest in 1969. Supposedly, she was sixteen. Carved into the fingers of her right hand was the Futhark symbol for gift. Carved into the fingers on her left hand, the symbol for family.

He steps back and looks at the new items, and then at the board as a whole.

CADE
There is no record of a Beth Krizer at any of the local colleges, or anywhere in the Sykesville area.
