ACT TWO

INT. HARPER'S HOSPITAL ROOM

Justin sits in a chair by his grandfather's bed, looking stunned. He rises, pacing the room, disturbed. Harper just lies there, watching him.

Harper is clearly not proud of what he's just told his grandson.

HARPER
You think I'm just a worthless old son of a gun don't you.

Justin turns and studies the broken man before him.

JUSTIN
Not...totally worthless.

HARPER
Ha. Shouldn't have behaved the way I did back then. Got no excuse.

JUSTIN
That's true.

Harper sighs.

HARPER
She didn't die you know. Lee Irwin came back.

JUSTIN
Where, to Oakbridge?

Harper shakes his head.

HARPER
About six months after the accident she turned up at Babcock Home for Girls. Thought old Gus would have a stroke when he heard about it. He was sure Lee would stir up a scandal about her time at Oakbridge.

JUSTIN
Did she?

HARPER
Apparently she never said a word about it. Never said a word about what'd happened in those six months either. Hardly talked at all I understand. But we all heard things.

Justin sits down, intrigued in spite of himself.

JUSTIN
Like what?

HARPER
Like she had these weird scars on her fingertips. Like someone had carved some kinda words on 'em. There was other stuff too. Folks said she could read minds.

JUSTIN
You're kidding.

HARPER
Nope. Lee told one girl at the orphanage that an inspection was coming up and she'd better not skip out and see her boyfriend like she was planning. No one even knew she had a boyfriend. Another time she said the cook had put poison in the pot roast. Sure enough. Everyone was sick for a week.

JUSTIN
So you believed all those stories?

HARPER
Didn't know what to believe. Didn't much care either. We were growing up, getting ready to leave Oakbridge. I joined the army as soon as I was old enough. The others stayed on in Sykesville. We all pretty much forgot about Lee Irwin. And then Randall...

He winces.

Justin begins to rise.

JUSTIN
What is it? Are you hurting?

HARPER
No, I was just remembering is all. I should have known then, but I never guessed.

JUSTIN
Guessed what? What happened?

EXT. BACKYARD

A now older Randall, late teens, early 20's, is chopping wood.

He brings the ax down and the handle snaps.

Randall's eyes widen as the ax head spins towards him.

HARPER (VO)
They said it was an accident. But it was a new ax. A good one.

20 year old Harper comes upon Randall, lying dead, his skull split open.

HARPER (VO)
I was the one who found him. It was a few months before I enlisted.

On the ground nearby, some of the wood has been arranged in the Blair Witch stick figure shape.

INT. HARPER'S HOSPITAL ROOM

Justin helps his grandfather drink some water.

HARPER
She got them all, one by one. Randall, Teddy, John, Gus. Even Lee's aunt Mary back in Eldersburg. They all looked like accidents, but I'm telling you, Lee killed them. I got out before she could come for me but I know she was coming.

JUSTIN
How can you be so sure?

HARPER
You check it out. You'll see there's something strange about how each of them died. And there's more. Lee sent me a message. Sent one to Randall too, but I didn't realize what it meant at the time.

JUSTIN
Message?

HARPER
A kind of drawing. Bunch of sticks piled together. I don't know if the others got one but I'd be willing to bet they did.

This whole time Harper's voice has been getting weaker.

HARPER
Come closer son.

Justin leans in.

HARPER
They think I fell down those steps, but I was pushed. The fall didn't kill me, so she's come to finish the job! She's here Justin, in this hospital! If you don't get me out of here, she'll kill me!

Justin stares at his grandfather, not sure what to say. Or even what to think.

HARPER
Don't stare at me like I'm an idiot. Either help me or get out!

EXT. HOSPITAL -- LATER

Justin emerges and sits on the front steps of the hospital. Across the street are the fairgrounds, where a ferris wheel is turning.

A shadow falls across him and he looks up.

ANGLE ON LESLIE

The book cart girl. She stands with the sun at her back, the light shining on her short blond hair.

LESLIE
Hi, how's your Grandfather? Did you start reading him the book?

JUSTIN
What? Oh, no. No he wasn't in the mood for a book.

LESLIE
That's too bad. Mind if I sit with you? I'm on break. My name's Leslie Wolf by the way.

JUSTIN
No, no I don't mind.

He clearly doesn't.

She sits down.

JUSTIN
I'm Justin Petit. Are you working at the hospital for the summer?

LESLIE
Volunteer work. I pass out books, fill the water pitchers, stuff like that. You're not from Sykesville are you?

JUSTIN
Washington DC. I've been here once to visit Grandpa Harper though. He grew up around here. How'd you know I wasn't from around here?

LESLIE
Lucky guess I suppose.

She smiles, and Justin does as well.

LESLIE
What happened to your grandfather?

JUSTIN
He fell on his front steps. They're really steep and made of stone. Plus it'd just been raining so they were pretty slippery. At least that's what everyone else says.

LESLIE
What do you mean?

JUSTIN
He says he was pushed.

LESLIE
Oh God that's awful! Who would do something like that?

JUSTIN
I'm not sure anyone did.

LESLIE
Well, he should know if someone pushed him right?

Justin frowns.

JUSTIN
Right...except...

LESLIE
But what?

She leans closer.

LESLIE
Is he getting senile or something?

JUSTIN
I guess so. I mean mom says he was getting forgetful and stuff. But since the accident he's gone really off the edge. It's like he lost his mind over night.

Leslie touches his arm sympathetically.

LESLIE
What does he say exactly?

EXT. FAIR GROUNDS -- LATER

Justin and Leslie are wandering the midway.

JUSTIN
Pretty wild isn't it.

Leslie nods thoughtfully.

LESLIE
But the way they all treated that girl, you can't blame her for wanting to get back at them.

Justin looks incredulous.

JUSTIN
You mean you believe what he says?

Leslie laughs a little sheepishly.

LESLIE
Oh, I don't know. But it is a fascinating story.

JUSTIN
Well this woman would be in her 70's by now. Why would she wait so long to come after him?

LESLIE
According to your Grandfather she didn't wait that long to get the others. They were all killed years ago. Maybe she couldn't find your Grandfather or something. Did he live here all his life?

JUSTIN
Actually no. He was in the army for a long time and they moved him around a lot. And even after he retired he didn't move back here until about six months ago.

LESLIE
Well there you go.

She squeezes his arm.

LESLIE
Are you going to check on his story like he asked?

JUSTIN
I told him I would.

LESLIE
I'm glad.

She wraps her arms around herself.

JUSTIN
Why are you glad?

LESLIE
Because he's old and scared I guess. And it will make him feel better that you're taking him seriously. Maybe he won't feel so alone.

She sighs.

LESLIE
I'd better get back.

JUSTIN
I'm glad we ran into each other again.

LESLIE
I'm glad too. When I saw you in the hospital I was hoping we could get to know each other a little.

She crooks her finger at him in a come closer gesture. He stands and leans close so she can whisper in his ear.

LESLIE
Will you let me know what you find out about your Grandfather's story?

He nods.

JUSTIN
Uh, sure.

LESLIE
Good.

She turns to go, giving him a flirtatious wave.

LESLIE
Bye Justin.

JUSTIN
Hey can you tell me where the library is?

She points off screen.

LESLIE
It's on West Hemlock, not very far from here.

JUSTIN
I'll be back later. Maybe I'll see you then?

LESLIE
Oh I'll be here Justin. If you don't find me, I'll find you. I promise.

INT. LIBRARY -- LATER

CLOSE ON MICROFICHE READER SCREEN

An old newspaper article is projected on the screen. The headline reads "Local Boy Burned to Death". Underneath is a sub-heading; "Fire's Source Remains Unknown". The rest of the article goes on to explain how the blaze at the gas station just seemed to appear and wrap around the boy.

Justin sits back from the viewer and rubs his eyes. He looks worried.

INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY -- LATER

Justin enters, just as Leslie is getting out of the elevator. She heads for the desk to sign out.

JUSTIN
Leslie!

She appears not to have heard him. She signs out and heads for another exit.

JUSTIN
Hey, Leslie wait up!

He hurries after her, finally catching up just as she gets to the door.

JUSTIN
Leslie?

She turns, confused. When she sees Justin however, she smiles.

LESLIE
Oh, hi Justin. Sorry I guess I was a little out of it. I barely heard you.

JUSTIN
That's okay, I'm glad I got back before you left. Are you in a hurry?

LESLIE
Sort of, I have a bunch of errands to run. But I guess I have a minute. For you anyway. Did you find anything at the library?

JUSTIN
Uh yeah. Grandpa was right, seems all those people died really strange deaths. Teddy Franks spontaneously combusted or something, John Boyle got tangled up in fishing line and strangled himself. Gus Ketterly somehow managed to shoot himself in the gut with a hunting rifle, and Mary Irwin drank a fifth of vodka with a poison mushroom in it.

Leslie grimaces.

JUSTIN
They could just all be coincidences though. And anyway even if Lee Irwin's in this hospital, how could Grandpa know what she looks like now? There's lots of old ladies here right?

LESLIE
Dozens. Maybe you should try to find out what happened to her. Lee Irwin I mean. You said she finally showed up at that orphanage right?

JUSTIN
The Babcock Home, yeah. I suppose I could check with them to see if they have any records of her.

Leslie grins.

LESLIE
I've always liked mysteries. Listen, I really have to go. I'll be here tomorrow afternoon though.

JUSTIN
Me too. We're not leaving until tomorrow night.

Leslie's smile fades.

LESLIE
Oh. I almost forgot you don't live around here.

JUSTIN
I'll be back next weekend though.

LESLIE
Great! I'll see you then.

She gives him a flirtatious smile, and leaves.

INT. HOSPITAL -- LATER

Justin approaches his grandfather's room just as his parents are leaving it. Both look extremely worried. His mother has clearly been crying.

JUSTIN
Did something happen?

JUSTIN'S FATHER
Your grandfather claims someone tried to choke him.

JUSTIN
What? Who?

JUSTIN'S MOTHER
No one. It was nobody! He hasn't had any other visitors, no one has been up here except doctors and nurses. He's lost his mind. He's just...lost his mind.

INT. HARPER'S LIVING ROOM

Justin enters and opens the phone book.

JUSTIN
Wolf, Wolf...

After a moment he sighs.

JUSTIN
Damn.

The phone rings and he quickly picks up the receiver.

JUSTIN
Hello?

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
This is Sister Catharine Filbey. I'm calling for a mister Justin Petit?

JUSTIN
Hello Sister this is Justin. Thanks for calling me back. This might sound a little strange, but I wanted to ask you about a girl who was at Babcock's when it was still an orphanage.

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
Oh my, so long ago? There were so many girls. May I ask why?

JUSTIN
My Grandfather knew her. He's sick. He doesn't want to find her or anything, he just wants to know what happened to her.

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
I doubt I could help you find her anyway. My memory's not what it used to be. Tell me her name I'll see if it rings a bell.

JUSTIN
Her name is Lee Irwin. She came to Babcock's sometime around 1942-

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
I remember Lee. Clear as day.

Justin sits in a chair by the phone and grabs a pen and paper.

JUSTIN
Really? That's great!

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
That poor thing. I'll never forget her, even though she was only with us for a year or so. We made a special effort to find a home for her as soon as possible.

JUSTIN
Why was that Sister? If you don't mind me asking.

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
Well she just turned up out of the blue one morning, in shock. No one could get a word out of her for the longest time. And even then she never said where she'd been or what she'd gone through. But it must have been something terrible.

JUSTIN
You don't happen to know where she is now do you?

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
I have no idea. But we were very happy when the Paperts adopted her.

JUSTIN
Sister, when you say you were happy...you meant for Lee right?

SISTER FILBEY (OS)
We were always glad when one of our girls found a permanent home of course.

EXT. BABCOCK'S ORPHANAGE

Louise is kneeling behind the chapel in a position of prayer. She is muttering.

SISTER FILBEY (VO)
I shouldn't say this because Lee never caused any trouble when she was here. None at all.

Young Sister Filbey comes upon Louise and watches her for a moment. She smiles.

SISTER FILBEY (VO)
But she was so, cold. Nothing and no one could touch that little girl inside.

Young Sister Filbey gets closer to Louise, and now we can hear what the girl is saying.

LOUISE
Ia, ia, Hecaitomix Nevurgivun...

Young Sister Filbey's smile turns to an expression of concern and confusion.

SISTER FILBEY (VO)
Spiritually there was just something not right about her.

YOUNG SISTER FILBEY
Lee?

Louise leaps startled to her feet and whirls on Young Sister Filbey. Her expression is one of absolute hatred. Young Sister Filbey starts back.

SISTER FILBEY (VO)
We were all relieved to see her go. It was wrong of me to feel that way then, and wrong of me to say so now, but it's the truth.

INT. HARPER'S HOSPITAL ROOM -- AFTERNOON

Justin sits by his Grandfather's bed. Harper is asleep, and Justin looks bored.

There are footsteps out in the hall, and Justin looks towards the door hopefully. But it's just a nurse passing by.

When he looks back at the bed, his Grandfather is awake and staring intently at him. Justin starts.

HARPER
Justin, are you going to get me out of here?

JUSTIN
I can't just sign you out Grandpa Harper. I wish I could but-

HARPER
She was here yesterday. In this room! I felt her hands around my neck. She didn't finish me off, she's saving that for later. She said she was just giving me a taste of what's coming. Then she left.

JUSTIN
Mom and Dad told me what you said.

He shifts uncomfortably.

HARPER
And you don't believe me. You think I've lost my marbles, just like your mother!

JUSTIN
No no! Look I tried to find out about Lee Irwin like you said-

Harper's eyes lock on the doorway, and he freezes in horror.

HARPER
It's her! It's her!

Justin jumps up and whirls around.

ANGLE ON THE DOOR

Leslie is standing in the doorway, looking shocked.

HARPER
No! Justin help!

LESLIE
What's wrong? Did I knock too hard? What did I do?

JUSTIN
It's okay Grandpa Harper! This is Leslie, she works here! She's a friend of mine.

HARPER
It's her!! Get me out of here she'll kill me!

Leslie, horrified, backs up. Justin looks frantically at the monitors which are beeping alarms at his Grandfather's agitation.

He turns to Leslie.

JUSTIN
Aren't there any nurses on this floor?

LESLIE
They must not be at the desk. Where's the emergency call button? Oh! There it is!

She runs to the button which is near Harper's bed. But she trips. As she falls, her flailing fingers catch on the oxygen line, yanking it out of Harper's nose.

Harper immediately begins gasping and choking. Justin frantically tries to put the hose back in as the nurse finally runs in.

JUSTIN
He can't breathe!

The nurse pushes past him and puts the hose right.

NURSE
It's okay, I got it. What happened?

JUSTIN
It was an accident. She tripped over one of the cords I think.

NURSE
Who?

Justin turns to point to Leslie, but she's gone.

JUSTIN
Les...
(he looks around)
Leslie. She's one of the volunteers. And now she probably thinks she killed him. I have to let her know he's okay.

HARPER
No! She'll kill you too!

Justin stops and looks incredulously back at his grandfather.

EXT. SYKESVILLE CARNIVAL -- AFTERNOON

The lights are flashing, the barkers are barking, the bumper cars are bumping, and crowds of children and their parents are having a wonderful time.

Justin, apparently having had no luck finding Leslie in the hospital, is now looking for her here.

At a nearby shooting gallery, a young boy is trying to shoot the ducks. A girl who looks like Leslie is watching.

JUSTIN
Leslie!

The girl doesn't react.

JUSTIN
Leslie? Leslie!

The girl turns and it is indeed Leslie. She looks less than happy to see him. In fact she seems to almost panic and tries to escape.

Justin catches up to her and grabs her arm.

LESLIE
Justin I'm so sorry!

She is crying.

LESLIE
I feel so awful about your grandfather! I didn't mean to kill him, and I know you must feel even worse but please I can't-

JUSTIN
He's not dead!

Leslie stops talking, staring at him.

LESLIE
What?

JUSTIN
You didn't kill him. He's fine. Well not fine but, you know what I mean.

Leslie gasps.

LESLIE
Oh...thank God! I thought for sure he was dead!

JUSTIN
Nope. I just wish you hadn't run away like that. The nurses fixed him up pretty quickly. I tried to find you at the hospital but you'd already gone.

LESLIE
I'm so glad you did find me.

JUSTIN
Yeah me too. I didn't want to leave without seeing you again.

Leslie smiles, blushing.

LESLIE
But what happened? Why did your grandfather freak out like that?

JUSTIN
Who knows? I guess Grandpa's mind is really messed up.

LESLIE
Maybe I remind him of Lee Irwin. I mean I have blond hair too and I'm not much older than she was when he knew her.

JUSTIN
I guess. And by the way I wasn't able to find out much about her, Lee I mean. She showed up at the girl's orphanage all right, just like Grandpa said. I talked to a Nun who used to work there. She said some people named Papert adopted her-

LESLIE
Papert? After she was adopted her named was Lee Papert?!

Justin nods. Leslie looks blown away.

LESLIE
I don't believe this. Lee Papert was my grandmother!
